Indigo Bay is about reconnecting with the people who designed, created or made our gifts. One way we would like to do this is to share interviews with our brands, giving a little insight into the everyday lives of the people who put their hearts and souls into their creations.
We are excited to launch our interview series with Sunshine Coast brand, Botanist Aromatherapy. Tanya, Botanist Aromatherapy's creator and maker, has turned her passion for natural products, essential oils and non-toxic living into a full-time business, all while maintaining her work/life/family balance.
Tell us about Botanist Aromatherapy – what is it about and how did it begin?
Every second woman I know was dabbling in essential oils with complete confusion. Most of them wanted something easy and definitely wanted less to choose from. It can be overwhelming looking at a hundred different options when most of us just want them for a few specific reasons. I created a capsule range with key solutions for calming & stress, personal wellness, happiness & self esteem, and sleep. I was already making all of these products for friends and family for a couple of years and finally decided to label them and go out on my own.
Is your brand your full-time job or a side hustle?
Definitely full time these days but I’m also a Mum so I try to balance my time with that.
What is a typical day for you?
A typical workday (if there’s such a thing) involves family daycare drop off before getting in the studio to check emails and reply to Instagram messages. Then I may start batching products and stocking up. I usually have orders to package and couriers to book and I always try to squeeze in some time to work on new product lines.
Every day can look very different when you are a one woman show as you are literally behind every facet of your business and nothing can be delegated yet.
Which part of your brand do you enjoy working on the most?
I think it would have to be creating the products. Getting into a beautiful space energy-wise and just pouring some love into small batches of products. I love knowing that each one will help someone feel lighter.
You have a young daughter – how do you balance motherhood with running a business?
Maisie goes to a beautiful family daycare three days a week and I get as much work done in that time as possible. We reserve most of the day on Mondays as family time as my husband is lucky enough to be home on Mondays too and Fridays are Mummy-daughter days with an occasional playdate. Maisie understands that I have customers and that Mummy also loves her work but I also try to be more present and give her quality time to make up for the time she misses out on.
Can you tell us what you have in mind for Botanist Aromatherapy in the next 12 months?
I am about to release a new range of Diffuser Blends any day now and I’m working on a couple of new products for the bath range as well as a top secret range that is a slight pivot for my brand. I am working on getting Botanist into many, many more stores this year and would love to see my products available for women all over Australia.
Your Everyday life
What do you enjoy doing (outside of your brand!)?
I am so lucky to have been able to turn what I love doing into my actual job but aside from that I love curling up with a great book, going to the beach with my family, cooking at home and eating out at great vegan restaurants, and I’ll be honest and say I love a bit of Netflix!
What are you reading at the moment?
I have 3 on the go at the moment:
The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**K by Sarah Knight
Intentional Living by John C. Maxwell
Open Wide by Melissa Ambrosini
What are you watching at the moment?
Bold Type (Stan)
Northern Rescue (Netflix)
You live on the Sunshine Coast – imagine you have a completely free day and can do anything you like. What would you do?
Take Maisie to Aussie World (her heaven) then go to Cafe Vie for lunch in Buderim and maybe to the beach for a swim before relaxing at home.
I love being at home near the beach and spending time with my family.

And finally, we have to ask - what is the best gift you have ever received?
This is a hard one for me as giving has always been more important to me than receiving. Maybe my wedding album as my beautiful cousin did all of our wedding photography as a gift and it holds some of my all time favourite memories. We got married in the Cook Islands and had all our photos taken before the ceremony. We went up into the hills with a bottle of vintage Dom Perignon and had so much fun, it was just us as we didn’t have any bridesmaids or groomsmen. The photos still make me cry!
