12 Types of Reader - Which One Are You?

Here at Indigo Bay we love nothing better than to curl up with a cup of coffee and getting lost in a good book.

Over our years of reading and chatting about books, we've found that there are very distinct types of readers. Here we've put together a list of 12 types - we know there are many more types out there, and we aren't just one type of reader, so make sure to let us know which you are in the comments.

1. The Ebook Denier

This reader absolutely refuses to even think about reading on a device. Screens are for email and work, not reading books! She loves the feel, smell, and sound of a physical book and doesn’t mind that her house has been taken over by books.

2. The Night Reader

The Night Reader - an image of the moon, stars and a romance book

When everyone else is sound asleep, this reader escapes into other worlds. Every night she says to herself 'just one more chapter...' - she spends the next day regretting it, but does it again, and again, and again. There is just something special about reading at night.

3. The Series Junkie

She loves finding new series, but hates waiting for the next book to be released. Her absolute favourite is finding series that has already been written, so she can binge read.

4. The Read-the-End-First Reader

Always has to have a sneak peek at the ending to make sure it ends how she wants it to. If it doesn’t, she has a serious think about whether she wants to commit to the book.

5. The Audiobook 'Reader'

This reader has no time for reading! A serious multi-tasker who needs to get sh🤍t done, she listens as she drives, does the housework, pretends to take part in Zoom meetings.

6. The HEA Lover

She loves love and loves to read about it. Happy endings are the best, but she can’t resist an occasional tear-jerker, and the spicier the better!

7. The Re-Reader

Some books are like a warm hug - she remembers the story, the lines, the characters like old friends. With others, it’s like reading a brand new book again... mostly because she’s read so many she’s forgotten the plot.

8. The 'I Judge a Book by Its Cover' Reader

The name just says it all. She's sucked in by a pretty cover and she will get it this book regardless of what the story is.

9. The DNF Reader

She has no problem not finishing a book if it doesn't grab her interest. She has been known to close a book (and sometimes even throwing it across the room!) after just a few pages because life's too short for boring books.

10. The Book Butterfly

The Book Butterfly - a pile of books with butterflies flying around it

She flits between books like a butterfly, never feeling the need to finish one before starting another. She has piles of books waiting for her on her bedside table, the kitchen bench, and coffee table, and will pick up whichever story calls to her that day.

11. The Rebel Reader

It's the latest craze on TikTok? Then it's a hell no from her. She might, maybe, possibly think about reading it in 3 or 5 years when the hype dies down, but probably not.

12. The One-Genre-Only Reader

If it's not romantasy forget it. She tried straight-up fantasy once. Never. Again.

No matter how you read - or how many books you have on the go - there’s a little magic in every page and every story. So whether you’re curling up with your latest binge or an old favourite, keep reading your way. And if there's a reader type we’ve missed, we’d love to hear about it!

  • I love this blog post, mainly because I too have been one or two of these throughout my reading life. I must admit I have never read the back page first (🙊) and I have never been a butterfly reader (although I wish I was). Since I have begun reading again I read a book from start to finish even if I am not loving it. I also love curating my ‘books to read list’. If I see a book I like or has been suggested from someone else, I screen shoot it and add it to my notes section on my phone. Titled “Books to read’. Then I do a deep dive at my local library. For some reason this also gives me a warm thrill🥰
